The Himalayan climbing community was amazed after a missing Sherpa guide was found alive on Mount Everest on 4 June 2026, six days after he disappeared during a descent from the mountain.
Dawa Sherpa, an experienced Nepali mountain guide, went missing on 29 May while descending from the upper slopes of Everest. Search teams were unable to locate him for several days, and hopes of finding him alive began to fade due to the extreme weather, freezing temperatures, and lack of oxygen at high altitude.
In a remarkable turn of events, he was discovered alive near the Khumbu Icefall by members of the route maintenance team. Despite spending nearly a week alone on the mountain, Dawa Sherpa managed to survive and make his way down through one of the most dangerous sections of Everest.
He was immediately rescued and evacuated for medical treatment. Although suffering from exhaustion and frostbite, he was alive and able to communicate with rescuers.
This incredible survival story highlights the resilience, strength, and determination of Sherpa climbers who work in some of the harshest conditions on Earth. Dawa Sherpa's survival is being celebrated across Nepal and the international mountaineering community as one of the most remarkable Everest rescue stories in recent years.
Mount Everest continues to remind climbers that while the mountain can be unforgiving, stories of courage and survival still inspire the world.
