Overview

The Upper Mustang Trek is not just a journey through the Himalayas, it feels like stepping into a hidden world that time almost forgot. Tucked behind the Annapurna range in the rain shadow region of northwestern Nepal, Upper Mustang reveals a dramatic landscape of wind-carved cliffs, deep canyons and vast desert-like valleys that look more like Tibet than the lush hills most people imagine when they think of Nepal.

This 14-day adventure takes you into the former Kingdom of Lo, where ancient traditions are still alive. As you walk past whitewashed villages, prayer flags fluttering in the wind and centuries-old monasteries clinging to cliffs, you begin to feel the quiet rhythm of life in this remote Himalayan corner. The trail is less physically intense compared to high alpine glacier treks, but the altitude, dry terrain and long walking days still offer a rewarding challenge.

What makes this trek especially appealing is its balance. It suits trekkers who want something culturally rich and visually striking without needing technical climbing skills. Whether you are an experienced trekker looking for a different landscape or a first-time adventurer ready to go beyond the ordinary, Upper Mustang leaves a lasting impression.

Trek Highlights

  • Walking through the restricted and culturally preserved region of Upper Mustang

  • Visiting ancient monasteries such as Thubchen Gompa and Jampa Lhakhang
  • Experiencing Tibetan-influenced culture, language and traditions
  • Scenic flight between Pokhara and Jomsom with views of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri

  • Encounters with unique wildlife adapted to arid high-altitude environments

What Makes This Trek Special?

Upper Mustang stands apart from almost every other trek in Nepal. While regions like Everest and Annapurna are known for their glaciers and green valleys, Mustang offers a completely different atmosphere. It is dry, rugged and open, with a raw beauty that feels almost otherworldly.

One of the biggest highlights is its strong Tibetan influence. Because Upper Mustang was restricted to outsiders until the early 1990s, its culture has remained remarkably intact. You will see locals wearing traditional dress, practicing ancient rituals and living in mud-brick homes that have stood for generations.

Another unique aspect is the accessibility of high-altitude desert landscapes without extreme trekking difficulty. You get panoramic Himalayan views, high passes and remote villages without needing to tackle technical climbs. Add to that the historic walled city of Lo Manthang and the trek becomes both a cultural and visual journey unlike any other.

Trek Route Experience

The journey usually begins with a scenic flight from Pokhara to Jomsom, where the Kali Gandaki Valley opens up into a wide, windswept corridor between the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. From here, the trail gradually transitions from green lower Mustang into the stark, dramatic terrain of Upper Mustang.

You follow ancient trade routes along the Kali Gandaki River, passing through villages like Kagbeni, Chele, Syangboche, Ghami and Tsarang. Each settlement has its own character, with mani walls, chortens and monasteries marking the path.

As you move deeper into the region, the landscape becomes more surreal. Towering cliffs with layers of red, orange and brown surround you. Narrow gorges open into wide valleys and distant snow-capped peaks frame the horizon. Eventually, you reach Lo Manthang, a fortified city that feels like a living museum of Himalayan history.

The return route often follows a slightly different path, offering fresh perspectives and new scenery, including hidden caves and less-traveled trails.

How Difficult Is the Upper Mustang Trek?

This trek is considered moderate in difficulty. It does not require technical climbing skills, but it does demand good physical fitness and endurance.

You will typically walk 5 to 7 hours a day over uneven terrain, including rocky trails, dusty paths and occasional steep ascents. The altitude is a key factor, as the trek reaches around 3,800 meters near Lo Manthang. While this is lower than Everest region treks, proper acclimatization is still important.

The dry climate and strong afternoon winds can also make trekking more challenging. Staying hydrated and pacing yourself is essential.

For beginners with a good fitness level and proper preparation, this trek is achievable. For experienced trekkers, it offers a refreshing change from more crowded and physically demanding routes.

Best Time to Trek

One of the biggest advantages of Upper Mustang is that it lies in a rain shadow area, making it suitable even during the monsoon season.

  • Spring (March to May): Mild temperatures, clear skies and colorful landscapes. A great time for photography.
  • Summer/Monsoon (June to August): Surprisingly ideal due to minimal rainfall in Mustang. Trails remain dry and accessible.
  • Autumn (September to November): Best overall season with stable weather, clear mountain views and comfortable temperatures.
  • Winter (December to February): Cold and windy, with some lodges closed. Less recommended unless you are well prepared.

Accommodation and Meals

Accommodation along the Upper Mustang route is mainly in tea houses and local lodges. These are simple but comfortable, offering basic twin-sharing rooms with blankets and shared bathrooms.

In more remote villages, facilities can be limited, but the hospitality is warm and genuine. Some itineraries may include camping in less developed areas, though tea house trekking is now more common.

Meals are hearty and designed to fuel long trekking days. You can expect:

  • Dal Bhat (rice, lentils, vegetables) as the staple meal
  • Noodles, soups, fried rice and Tibetan bread
  • Local specialties like Thukpa and Tsampa
  • Tea, coffee and simple snacks

Permits Required

Upper Mustang is a restricted area, so special permits are required:

  • Restricted Area Permit (RAP):
USD 500 per person for the first 10 days, plus USD 50 per additional day
  • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP):
    Around NPR 3,000 per person
  • TIMS Card (Trekkers’ Information Management System):
    Around NPR 2,000

These permits must be arranged through a registered trekking agency and independent trekking is not allowed in Upper Mustang.
